Since 2018, Kenya's mobile money networks have been interoperable — meaning you can send money directly from Airtel Money to M-Pesa (and vice versa) without either party needing to withdraw cash at an agent first. This guide covers both directions, the current fees, how long it takes, and what to do if a transfer doesn't arrive.
The Short Answer
Airtel Money → M-Pesa: dial *222# from your Airtel line → Send Money → enter the recipient's M-Pesa number → amount → PIN. M-Pesa → Airtel Money: dial *334# from your Safaricom line → Send Money → enter the recipient's Airtel number → amount → PIN. No special "cross-network" code is needed on either menu — both networks automatically detect the recipient's network from their phone number. Transfers arrive in the recipient's wallet within minutes.
Before You Start
- Both parties must be registered for mobile money on their respective networks. Sending Airtel Money to an unregistered Safaricom line, or M-Pesa to an unregistered Airtel line, won't work — the funds have nowhere to land.
- You'll need enough balance to cover the amount plus the fee. The fee is deducted from your wallet in addition to the amount you send; the recipient always receives the full amount you entered.
- Have the recipient's mobile number ready in the standard 10-digit format (e.g., 0722… for Safaricom, 0733… or 0750… for Airtel). Check the confirmation screen before pressing send — most cross-network mistakes are wrong numbers, not fee surprises.
How to Send from Airtel Money to M-Pesa
- Dial
*222#on your Airtel line. - Select Send Money.
- Enter the M-Pesa recipient's mobile number (any Safaricom prefix — 0722, 0723, 0724, 0725, 0729, 0740–0749, 0757, etc.).
- Enter the amount you want to send.
- Enter your Airtel Money PIN.
- Review the confirmation screen — check the recipient's name, number, and amount — then confirm.
Alternatively, if you have the Airtel Thanks app on your smartphone, the flow is: Send Money → enter the M-Pesa number → amount → PIN, with the same underlying logic.
You don't need to choose "Send to M-Pesa" or "Send to other network" separately — Airtel Money detects that the recipient's number is on Safaricom and routes the transaction through the interoperability rail automatically.
How to Send from M-Pesa to Airtel Money
- Dial
*334#on your Safaricom line (or open the M-Pesa app / M-PESA menu on the SIM Toolkit). - Select Send Money.
- Enter the Airtel recipient's mobile number (Airtel prefixes include 0730–0739, 0750–0756, 0780–0789).
- Enter the amount you want to send.
- Enter your M-Pesa PIN.
- Review the Hakikisha confirmation prompt — check the recipient's name, number, and amount — then accept.
As with sending from Airtel, no cross-network menu is required — M-Pesa detects the Airtel line and routes the send through the interoperability rail. The recipient will see the funds land in their Airtel Money wallet directly, not as a voucher to collect at an agent.
What It Costs in 2026
Both networks now use identical cross-network Send Money tariffs — this changed in July 2026 when Airtel's rates aligned exactly with Safaricom's tariff, band for band.
| Amount Sent (KSh) | Fee (KSh) — Airtel to M-Pesa or M-Pesa to Airtel |
|---|---|
| 10 – 100 | Free |
| 101 – 500 | 7 |
| 501 – 1,000 | 13 |
| 1,001 – 1,500 | 23 |
| 1,501 – 2,500 | 33 |
| 2,501 – 3,500 | 53 |
| 3,501 – 5,000 | 57 |
| 5,001 – 7,500 | 78 |
| 7,501 – 10,000 | 90 |
| 10,001 – 15,000 | 100 |
| 15,001 – 20,000 | 105 |
| Above 20,000 (up to KSh 250,000) | 108 |
The fee comes out of the sender's wallet in addition to the amount sent — a KSh 1,000 send costs the sender KSh 1,013 total, and the recipient receives the full KSh 1,000.

How Long It Takes
Cross-network transfers between Airtel Money and M-Pesa are effectively instant — funds normally arrive in the recipient's wallet within a minute. During occasional periods of platform congestion (typically month-end and mid-month payroll days), transfers can take up to an hour, but the money is not lost — it settles once the network catches up.
Both the sender and the recipient receive an SMS confirmation from their own network showing the transaction reference number. Keep that SMS; it's the fastest reference if anything needs to be checked later.
Transaction Limits (Same on Both Sides)
Cross-network sends use each network's standard Send Money limits, which are the same on both:
| Limit | Amount (KSh) |
|---|---|
| Minimum per transaction (Airtel → M-Pesa) | 10 |
| Minimum per transaction (M-Pesa → Airtel, via Tuma Popote) | 101 |
| Maximum per single transaction | 250,000 |
| Maximum daily total | 500,000 |
| Maximum recipient wallet balance | 500,000 |
One limit that catches people out: if the recipient's wallet is already at the KSh 500,000 balance ceiling, the transfer will be rejected. The sender's money isn't deducted, but the transaction won't complete until the recipient makes room in their wallet.
When a Transfer Doesn't Arrive
Most cross-network transfers land within minutes. If more than an hour passes without the recipient seeing the funds, work through these checks in order:
- Confirm the sender's SMS says the transaction was successful. If it says "failed" or "insufficient balance," no money left the sender's wallet — try again.
- Check the recipient's actual balance directly on their phone (
*222#for Airtel Money,*334#or the M-Pesa app for M-Pesa). Balances shown in third-party SMS alerts can lag; the network menu is authoritative. - Verify the recipient's number was correct. Off-by-one-digit sends land in someone else's wallet — the transaction is technically successful, just to the wrong person.
- Check that the recipient is actually registered for mobile money on their network. Cross-network transfers only work between two active mobile money accounts.
- If steps 1–4 all check out, contact your network's customer care:
- Airtel Money: dial 100 from an Airtel line or +254 733 100 100 from any line.
- M-Pesa: dial 100 from a Safaricom line or +254 722 000 100 from any line, or message the Zuri chatbot on WhatsApp at 0722 000 100.
Sending to the Wrong Number: Reversal Options
Cross-network reversals are harder than same-network reversals because two carriers are involved. Two rules matter:
- M-Pesa users have a self-service reversal route — forward the M-Pesa transaction SMS to 456, and Safaricom will attempt an automatic reversal if the funds haven't been withdrawn or moved onward. This works for M-Pesa-to-Airtel transfers when the sender is on M-Pesa.
- Airtel Money has no published equivalent self-service shortcode. If you sent from Airtel to the wrong M-Pesa number, contact Airtel customer care immediately (100 from an Airtel line). Speed matters — the sooner the case is opened, the higher the chance of a successful reversal before the recipient withdraws.
Neither network guarantees a reversal, so always double-check the confirmation screen — the recipient's name, the number, and the amount — before entering your PIN. The two seconds that check takes is the single most effective way to avoid needing customer care.
When Cross-Network Sending Isn't the Right Choice
Sending directly across networks is usually the cheapest option, but a couple of edge cases are worth knowing:
- Both parties are on Airtel and can accept mobile money. Send Airtel-to-Airtel — it's free at every amount, unlike any cross-network route.
- The recipient's Airtel Money wallet is at its KSh 500,000 balance ceiling. Ask them to move funds to a bank account (free from Airtel Money) or spend down the wallet before you send.
- You're moving money to your own second account. If both accounts are yours, wallet-to-bank-to-wallet is usually cheaper than paying a cross-network send fee twice.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a special code to send money from Airtel to M-Pesa? No. The standard Send Money option on the *222# Airtel menu detects that the recipient is on M-Pesa and routes the transfer automatically. The same is true in reverse: M-Pesa's *334# Send Money option handles cross-network sends without any additional step.
Is sending across networks more expensive than same-network? On M-Pesa, no — cross-network Send Money uses the same fee table as sending to another M-Pesa user. On Airtel Money, yes, but only because Airtel-to-Airtel is free while cross-network sends match M-Pesa's fee table.
How long does an Airtel to M-Pesa transfer take? Usually under a minute. During occasional congestion it can take up to an hour, but the money isn't lost — it settles when the platform catches up.
Can I send money from Airtel Money to an unregistered Safaricom number? No. The recipient must have an active M-Pesa account for the funds to land. Safaricom discontinued sending to unregistered users on both same-network and cross-network routes in early 2024.
Do I need to know which network prefix the recipient is on? Not strictly — you enter the recipient's full number, and each network detects the destination automatically. Knowing the prefix helps you double-check the confirmation screen, though. Airtel prefixes include 0730–0739, 0750–0756, 0780–0789. Safaricom includes 0700–0729 and 0740–0749, among others.
What's the maximum I can send from Airtel Money to M-Pesa? KSh 250,000 per single transaction, and KSh 500,000 in a single day.
