Airtel Money is Kenya's second-largest mobile money service after M-Pesa, and getting started with it takes a few minutes if you have an Airtel line and a valid ID. This guide walks through the full registration process, the everyday transactions you'll actually use, the USSD codes for each, and the small things worth knowing before you send your first transaction.
The Short Answer
To register: get an Airtel SIM if you don't have one, dial *222#, choose the register option, enter your ID number, set a 4-digit PIN, and wait for the confirmation SMS. To use it: dial *222# from your Airtel line to open the Airtel Money menu, where you can send money, withdraw cash, buy airtime, and pay bills. You'll need your original National ID or Kenyan Passport to transact at any Airtel Money agent.
What You'll Need Before Registering
- An active Airtel Kenya SIM card in a phone you can dial USSD codes from (any phone works — no smartphone required).
- A valid Kenyan National ID or Kenyan Passport. These are the two documents Airtel Money agents are permitted to accept for registration at agent outlets. Foreign nationals should register at an official Airtel service centre, since not all IDs (Alien Certificate, Military ID) are accepted at ordinary agent outlets.
- A phone number that isn't already registered for Airtel Money. One person can hold multiple Airtel Money accounts up to a limit, but each phone number is tied to a single account.
- Your own 4-digit PIN — one you'll remember but that isn't guessable (avoid your birth year, "1234," or your ID's last four digits).
How to Register for Airtel Money
Registration is free and takes roughly five minutes. There are two main routes.
Option 1: Register via USSD from your phone
- Dial
*222#on your Airtel line. - Select the Register option from the menu.
- Enter your Kenyan National ID number (or Passport number) exactly as it appears on the document.
- Create a 4-digit Airtel Money PIN. You'll be asked to enter it twice to confirm.
- Wait for a confirmation SMS. Your Airtel Money account is now active on that line.
Option 2: Register at an Airtel Money agent
If you'd rather have someone walk you through it, or you want to make a first deposit immediately, visit any Airtel Money agent. Bring your original National ID or Passport — a copy or a photo of the ID won't be accepted. The agent will run the registration for you and you can deposit cash into your new wallet in the same visit.
After registration
Your Airtel Money account is tied to the phone number on that Airtel SIM. Your PIN is what authorises every transaction, so keep it private — Airtel staff and agents will never ask for it.
Loading Money into Your Airtel Money Wallet
There are three practical ways to put money into your Airtel Money wallet:
- Cash deposit at an Airtel Money agent — the most common route. Give the agent your Airtel number, the cash, and confirm the transaction on your phone. Deposits are free.
- Wallet-to-wallet transfer from another Airtel Money user — free at every amount, since Airtel-to-Airtel sends carry no fee.
- Bank transfer from your bank account — most Kenyan banks let you send from your account to your Airtel Money wallet using the bank's app, USSD, or paybill. Airtel has periodically run "Rudishiwa" promotions that refund the transaction fee on this route.
You can also receive money from abroad through Airtel's Remitly partnership, which credits your wallet directly at no charge to you.
Using Airtel Money: Everyday Transactions
Every Airtel Money transaction starts at the *222# main menu. The options you'll use most often:
Sending money
- Dial
*222#and select Send Money. - Enter the recipient's mobile number.
- Enter the amount and your PIN.
- Confirm the transaction on the summary screen.
Airtel Money automatically detects whether the recipient is on Airtel, M-Pesa, or T-Kash, so you don't need a special menu for cross-network sends. Airtel-to-Airtel transfers are free at any amount. Cross-network transfers (Airtel to M-Pesa or T-Kash) currently use the same fee table as M-Pesa's Send Money tariff — see the full Airtel Money Send Money Charges table.
Withdrawing cash at an agent
- Ask the agent for their Airtel Money agent number and confirm they have enough float to pay you out.
- Present your original National ID or Passport — this is required at every withdrawal, not just registration.
- Dial
*222#→ Withdraw Money → enter the agent number, amount, and your PIN. - The agent gives you the cash once the transaction confirms.
The minimum withdrawal at an agent is KSh 50. Charges range from KSh 11 for the smallest bands up to KSh 309 for withdrawals above KSh 50,000 — see the full Airtel Money Withdrawal Charges table.
Buying airtime
- Dial
*222#→ Buy Airtime. - Choose whether to buy for yourself or another number.
- Enter the amount and your PIN.
Buying Airtel airtime through Airtel Money is free.
Paying a bill (Lipa na Airtel Money)
- Dial
*222#→ Lipa na Airtel Money → Paybill. - Enter the business number, then the account or reference number.
- Enter the amount and your PIN.
- Confirm the transaction on the summary screen.
Utility bills such as electricity are free to the customer when paid through Lipa na Airtel Money. Other Paybill charges depend on the individual biller's arrangement with Airtel — see the Lipa na Airtel Money Paybill Charges guide.
Sending money to a bank account
Wallet-to-bank transfers are free on Airtel Money, following the November 2023 tariff revision that waived these charges. The exact menu step varies slightly by bank, but the general flow is: *222# → Send to Bank or Wallet to Bank → select your bank → enter the account number, amount, and PIN.
Checking your balance
Dial *222# and select the balance option, or send the balance request via the menu. Balance enquiries are free.
Airtel Money Limits You Should Know
| Limit | Amount (KSh) |
|---|---|
| Maximum wallet balance | 500,000 |
| Maximum daily transaction total | 500,000 |
| Maximum amount per single transaction | 250,000 |
| Minimum transaction amount | 10 |
| Minimum agent withdrawal | 50 |
If a transfer would push your balance above KSh 500,000, or your day's total above KSh 500,000, the transaction is rejected. These limits were set in coordination with the Central Bank of Kenya and are broadly identical to M-Pesa's.
Keeping Your Account Safe
Mobile money fraud is common in Kenya, and almost all of it relies on tricking users into sharing their PIN or approving a transaction they didn't initiate. A few habits that matter:
- Never share your PIN. Airtel staff, agents, and customer care will never ask for it — anyone who does is trying to defraud you.
- Read the confirmation screen before pressing send. Check the recipient's name, phone number, and amount. Once a transaction goes through, reversing it is not guaranteed.
- Watch for fake "you've received money" SMS. Fraudsters send lookalike SMS messages asking you to "refund" money you never actually received. Confirm your balance via
*222#before acting on any SMS. - Report suspicious activity immediately. Call Airtel customer care (100 from an Airtel line, or +254 733 100 100) if you spot an unauthorised transaction or suspect your PIN has been compromised. Change your PIN through
*222#immediately. - Keep your SIM secure. SIM swap fraud lets an attacker take over your Airtel Money account. If your line suddenly loses service without explanation, contact Airtel right away.
Common Problems and How to Fix Them
"Invalid ID number" during registration. Enter the ID number exactly as printed on the document, with no spaces or dashes. If the error repeats, visit an Airtel Money agent to register in person.
Forgotten PIN. Dial *222# and use the PIN reset option, or contact Airtel customer care on 100 to be walked through a reset. You'll need to confirm your ID details.
Transaction rejected because of insufficient balance. Check the actual balance and the fee — the fee comes out of your wallet on top of the amount you're sending, so KSh 5,000 sent across networks needs roughly KSh 5,057 in the wallet.
"Recipient not registered" when sending across networks. Confirm the recipient is registered for mobile money on their own network — Airtel Money, M-Pesa, or T-Kash. Sending to a phone number with no mobile money account attached is not supported.
Sent money to the wrong number. Contact Airtel customer care immediately on 100 (from an Airtel line) or +254 733 100 100. Airtel does not currently publish a self-service SMS reversal shortcode the way M-Pesa does with the SMS-to-456 route, so the faster you report it, the better your chance of stopping the funds before they're withdrawn.
Frequently Asked Questions
