How Airtel Money Send Money Charges Work

Airtel Money prices sending money differently depending on the recipient's network. Sending to another Airtel Money wallet is free at every amount. Sending to a registered user on another network — M-Pesa or T-Kash — uses a tiered band structure: every transaction within a band pays the same flat fee, and crossing into the next band increases the charge immediately.

Transfers of KSh 100 or below are free regardless of destination network. This applies whether you're sending to an Airtel Money wallet or a wallet on another network.

Airtel to Airtel — Free at Every Amount

This is Airtel Money's clearest and most durable pricing advantage. Whether you send KSh 20 or KSh 250,000 to another Airtel Money user, the transaction carries no fee. By contrast, Safaricom charges for M-Pesa-to-M-Pesa transfers above KSh 100.

How This Compares to M-Pesa

Airtel's cross-network Send Money tariff is now identical, band-for-band, to Safaricom's own M-Pesa Send Money tariff for the equivalent amount. Sending KSh 1,000 costs KSh 13 whether you're sending from Airtel to M-Pesa or from M-Pesa to M-Pesa. This represents a significant shift from Airtel Money's earlier positioning as the lower-cost network for cross-network transfers — that gap has closed. Airtel's remaining cost advantage for sending money now rests entirely on Airtel-to-Airtel transfers, which stay free regardless of amount.

Who Can You Send Money To?

  • Registered Airtel Money users — Free at every amount.
  • Registered M-Pesa users — Uses the cross-network tariff table above.
  • Registered T-Kash users — Uses the cross-network tariff table above.

Tips for Reducing Send Money Charges

  • Confirm the recipient's network before sending. If they're on Airtel, the transfer is free; if not, the standard band fee applies.
  • Keep small transfers at or under KSh 100. These are free to any network.
  • Consolidate transfers where practical. Sending one larger amount is usually cheaper per shilling than several smaller transfers, since the flat-band fee doesn't scale down for split transactions.
  • Compare against withdrawing cash first. If your recipient can receive money digitally, sending directly to their wallet is typically cheaper than withdrawing cash and handing it over in person — see Airtel Money Withdrawal Charges for the comparison.
